Piston: Testing and Inspection

RING TO PISTON GROOVE CLEARANCE

- Clean piston ring groove before checking

^ New:
1st Compression Ring: 0.06-0.09 (0.0024-0.0036 inch).
2nd Compression Ring: 0.05-0.08 (0.0020-0.0032 inch).
Oil Scraper Ring: 0.03-0.06 (0.0012-0.0024 inch).

^ Wear Limit:
1st Compression Ring: 0.25 (0.0098 inch).
2nd Compression Ring: 0.25 (0.0098 inch).
Oil Scraper Ring: 0.15 (0.0059 inch).

PISTON PROTRUSION

- Piston protrusion above TDC must be measured whenever new pistons, rods or a short block is installed.
- Depending upon the piston protrusion above TDC, install the correct gasket using the following table:

^ Piston protrusion: 0.91 mm to 1.00 mm
Use gasket with: 1 Holes/notches

^ Piston protrusion: 1.01 mm to 1.10 mm
Use gasket with: 2 Holes/notches

^ Piston protrusion: 1.11 mm to 1.20 mm
Use gasket with: 3 Holes/notches

- Cylinder head gasket identification:

- Part number = black arrow
- Holes/notches = white arrow

NOTE: If differing results are obtained when measuring piston protrusion, use the largest measurement to select the correct gasket.
