Water Pump: Service and Repair



Engine Coolant Pump, Removing and Installing

Special tools needed:
Engine support bracket 10-222A and adapter 10-222A/3
Wrench VAG 1590
Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm (3 to 40 ft lb)

CAUTION: Get radio code first if radio is theft protected before disconnecting the battery.

Removing
- Switch ignition off.

- Disconnect battery ground strap.

- Disconnect exhaust pipe from Three Way Catalytic Converter

- Drain coolant refer to "Cooling System Draining and Filling". Service and Repair

- Remove ribbed belt. Service and Repair

- Remove air intake.





- Remove ignition wires from ignition coil and wire guides. Remove ignition wire guide -2-.

- Remove vacuum hose between intake manifold upper section and fuel pressure regulator.

- Remove Intake Air Temperature Sensor from intake manifold upper section.

- Remove coolant expansion tank and place aside. Leave hoses attached.





- Install engine support bracket 10-222A and adapter 10-222A/3

- Engage support bracket in lifting eyes an left and right side of cylinder head and lift engine slightly

- Detach transmission at left rear drive train mount and engine at right rear mount.





- From above detach engine from font engine/transmission mount Carefully lift engine.

- Remove pulley from coolant pump using VAG 1590 to loosen and tighting bolt.

NOTE: If necessary modify wrench see Fig. 1 in "Engine Component Layout And Replacement". Service and Repair

- Remove coolant pump.

NOTE: To remove and install the coolant pump push engine by hand slightly to the left to gain clearance.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal but note the following:





- When you install the front and right rear mounts be sure that the recesses on the console engage in the recesses of the mount -arrows-.

- Screw in all bolts by hand approx. 5 to 6 turns.

- Rock engine to align engine transmission mounts and relieve any stress.

- First tighten mounts front and right rear then tighten left rear mount.

- Install air intake hose.

- Install ribbed belt.

- Fill with coolant
