Description and Operation Up to Jan. 1993

Hall Sender:

PURPOSE
The Camshaft Position Sensor signal is used (in conjunction with the engine reference signal) to identify # 1 cylinder for sequential injection and knock control.

LOCATION
Mounted in the ignition distributor (left side of cylinder head).

CONSTRUCTION
The Camshaft Position Sensor consists of a magnetic enclosure and integrated semiconductor circuit (the Hall IC). The IC is enclosed in plastic for protection.

The shutter wheel has a single window to indicate TDC.

OPERATION
A voltage signal is generated when the shutter wheel interrupts the magnetic field of the IC. Since the shutter turns at camshaft speed, one signal is generated for every two crankshaft revolutions.

A fault code is stored if the Camshaft Position Sensor malfunctions. The vehicle will start, but run in "safe" mode (no sequential injection, retarded timing).
