ECM - Top Speed Limiting Control
GROUP: 25NUMBER: 93-01
DATE: May 15, 1993
SUBJECT:
Vehicle Top Speed limiting via ECM
MODEL(s):
Passat w/4 cyl. Engine 1993 m.y.
Beginning with m.y. 1993, the top speed of US vehicles will be limited via the Engine Control Module (ECM).
The following ECM's have this speed limiting feature:
8A0907404CC (Canada)
8A0907404EA (with a green dot)
8A09O7404J
8A0907404H
Using the signal processed by the Speedometer (G 21), the ECM recognizes if the vehicle speed exceeds 190km per hour (118 mph). If this condition is met, the ECM reverses the control current to the Differential Fuel Pressure Regulator (N 73) thus shutting off the fuel (the same as with the fuel deceleration shut-off function).
If the vehicle speed signal is interrupted for any reason, the ECM will take the following control actions (based on engine RPM):
VEHICLES WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Fuel shut-off is applied when engine speed exceeds 5000 rpm.
VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Fuel shut-off is applied 2 seconds after engine speed exceeds 5000 rpm, allowing the transmission time to shift to the next higher gear during kickdown.
Note
If a customer complains that the engine cuts out above 5000 rpm, check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory of the ECM for stored codes using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool.
IF DTC code 00281 is displayed:
"Sender for vehicle speed G68 no signal" *
* Some VAG 1551 Scan Tools will display component code G 68 for this condition. FOR THOSE TESTERS: the display is INCORRECT. The correct component code is G 54.
See the DTC code table in Repair Group D2 for additional information.
Note that Repair Group D2 has recently been re-named Repair Group 01.
