1993-95 Model Volkswagen VR6 Vehicles

TITLE
Replace Radiator Fan Motor / Fan Blade

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a voluntary recall campaign for 1993 through 1995 model Volkswagen VR6 vehicles. The recall involves the replacement of the radiator fan motor and/or fan blade.

Defect Description

It is possible that the radiator fan could fail because of:

A. an improper fan motor shaft material composition combined with a possible loss of the fan motor blade lock nut torque on early model vehicles, or

B. a possible loss of the fan blade lock nut torque, on later model vehicles.

The VIN ranges and model numbers of the affected vehicles are as follows:

Vehicle Identification Number

Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial number range of affected vehicles. Use of the V-Crest campaign inquiry system will allow you to determine whether or not a particular vehicle requires the corrective work.

Remedial Action

The repair consists of either the replacement of the complete radiator fan motor, including fan blade and lock nut assembly or the replacement of the fan blade and lock nut.

Important: Please Provide A copy To All Personnel With Recall-Related Responsibilities!

Notification Mailings

Volkswagen will mail first class notification letters to all known owners of affected vehicles, commencing on or about November 9, 1995. A copy of the owner letter is included in this circular.

Vehicle Allocation

Enclosed with the recall circular copy, addressed to the attention of the Service Manager, will be a computer list containing information of vehicles and owners who may reside within your area of influence.

IMPORTANT: The listing includes owner names and addnesses obtained from state motor vehicle registrations. Under the law of some states, including regulations set forth by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, vehicle registration information may only be used for recall purposes. Use 1 other reasons may constitute a violation of state law.

Limitations on Sale or Lease of Certain Vehicles
Section 154(d) of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 mandates that dealers correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle which fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or which contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety. It is, therefore, imperative that any vehicle in your used car inventory and affected by this recall is corrected prior to sale.

Parts Information

Beginning on or about November 2, 1995, Volkswagen will ship to dealers an initial supply of recall parts as follows:

Please note that at the beginning of the action only a limited supply of some of the above recall parts will be available. Therefore, make sure that you have parts available, upon scheduling your customer appointments. Volkswagen will continue monthly automatic allocations of additional parts to you, according to your vehicle allocation; hence, please refrain from ordering any of these parts for your dealer parts inventory.

Do not let customers wait longer than necessary during service of the vehicle. If a customer, indeed, is inconvenienced, offer a loaner vehicle. Every effort should be made to reduce inconvenience to customers.

VwoA is determined to complete as many vehicles as possible within six (6) months of initiation. We will mall a gift to those customers who comply within this time frame. For this reason, we ask that you please ensure that claims are entered into the system in a timely manner after you have completed this recall.
