Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

Requirements

- Fuses 18 and 21 OK

- Ground connections OK (engine ground connection: at cylinder head cover on left and beneath lower section of the intake manifold).

DLC Location Passat:

VAG 1551 connection

- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3 to connect scan tool to 16 Pin Data Link Connector (DLC).The following displays appear alternately:

Note: If there is no display, check the voltage supply for scan tool. Refer to VAG 1551 /Voltage Supply Checking.

- Depending on which function is required; either switch ON ignition or start engine and let idle.


Note: If engine does not start, crank engine 4 to 6 seconds and leave ignition switched ON.

- To obtain additional operating instructions press the HELP button.

- To step through the program sequence, press the -> button

- Press button 1 to select operating mode "Rapid data transfer", Display will appear as follows:

Enter address word XX


- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics".Display will appear as follows:

- Press Q button to enter input. The engine control module identification number is indicated via the display, for example: 021 906 258 B. Display will appear as follows:

Note: Only during idle speed do correct specifications regarding the engine control module number and related coding occur.

- Press -> button. If display appears as follows:

ECM does not answer\

- Print out a list of possible causes by pressing the VAG 1551 HELP button.

- After eliminating possible causes, reselect operating mode and address word, display appears as follows:

Select function XX


- Select function code from Selectable Function Table

- Press Q button to enter input and see the proper procedure article for your selection.

Note: If function 02 Check DTC memory' (DTC MEMORY) is to be selected.

- Switch on the printer using the print button, lamp in print button lights.

- When the printer is switched ON stored malfunctions are automatically printed out in sequence.
