The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), Fig. 1, is designed to supplement protection offered by seat belts in a frontal impact collision.

The SRS incorporates an on-board diagnostic feature. System faults or diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) detected are stored in the control unit memory, located behind the center console. DTCs can be extracted from the memory using a scan tool No. VAG 1551, or equivalent.
