Shiftlock III system operation
CAUTION
Before working on a running engine, always:
^ place selector lever in P
^ engage parking brake
Checking with selector lever in P
Note
During checking procedure do NOT operate brake pedal until instructed to do so.
- place selector lever in P
- switch ignition ON
- try shifting selector lever out of P
^ it must NOT be possible to shift cut of P
If selector lever can be shifted out of P
^ shiftlock system is malfunctioning: solenoid is NOT triggering a "blocking" action at selector lever
If selector lever cannot be shifted out of P
^ shiftlock mechanism is functioning: solenoid HAS triggered a "blocking" action at selector lever
- apply brake pedal and hold
- shift selector lever out of P
If selector lever cannot be shifted out of P
^ system is malfunctioning; solenoid is NOT being deactivated to release selector lever
If selector lever can be shifted out of P
^ system is functioning: solenoid IS deactivated to release selector lever
Checking with selector lever in N
Note
Repeat checking procedure, this time with selector lever in N (ignition ON). As before, DO NOT operate the brake pedal until instructed to do so. The results must be identical to those specified for checking with the selector lever in P.
Checking with vehicle in motion
- operate vehicle at speeds OVER 5 km/h (3 mph)
- shift selector lever into N
^ shiftlock solenoid must NOT block selector lever (e.g. it must be possible to shift back into D)
- operate vehicle at speeds UNDER 5 km/h (3 mph)
- shift selector lever into N
^ shiftlock solenoid MUST block the selector lever after one second (e.g. it must NOT be possible to shift back into D)
Note
Once the brake pedal is applied, however, the selector lever can again be shifted out of the N position
Additional functional check
- check that the vehicle will NOT start with selector lever in positions R, D, 3, 2 or 1
Ignition lock mechanism, checking
- place selector lever in P position
- turn ignition key to OFF position
- remove key
^ it must NOT be possible to remove key with ignition switch in any other position but OFF
- attempt to shift selector lever (with key removed)
^ it must NOT be possible to shift select lever out of P

^ place selector lever cable in selector support before installing boot

^ when replacing cable or lever:
a. disconnect exhaust system in front of catalytic converter (vehicles with VR6 engine: remove catalytic converter)
b. remove heat shield
^ do not bend or kink cable
^ lightly lubricate cable eye and ends before-installing
^ tighten selector lever cable at selector support to 20 N-m (15 ft.lb.)
^ check protec1ive sleeve between bracket (item 24) and lever (item 23)
^ fasten selector lever cable to selector lever see Fig 3
^ adjusting
a. position selector lever in P
b. loosen shoulder bolt (item 26)
c. move lever (item 23) into P (detent lever must engage in parking lock gear, locking both front wheels)
d. in this. position, tighten shoulder bolt to 25 N-m (18 ft.lb.)
18 - Seal
^ bonded to cable anchor
^ replace if damaged
19 - Circlip
^ insert, after installing selector lever cable (see Fig. 3)
20 - Washer
21 - 6 N-m (53 in.lb. or 61 cm kg)

- remove connector for Oxygen Sensor (O2S)
- disconnect front end of catalytic converter (exception - vehicles with 6-cylinder engines: remove catalytic converter also)
- remove front heat shield
- remove rear bolts

Installation is performed in the reverse

Note
On some vehicles, the wiring harness may also include the solenoid for the selector lever lock.

Selector lever, disassembling/assembling
Note
In order to replace an individual selector lever component, the lever itself must be removed. See selector lever/cable assembly, page 37-4.
1 - Selector lever

^ apply grease to contact surfaces

^ install pressure rod first, before installing sleeve

^ always replace
^ in order to loosen shaft bolt, first remove solenoid for selector lever lock and selector scale light. Clamp shaft bolt in vise and loosen by turning selector lever
^ install with locking compound AMV 200 000
7 - Solenoid for selector lever lock, i.e. shiftlock solenoid (N110)
^ on some vehicles, wiring harness may include solenoid.

Note
Before installing selector lever in selector support, be sure:
^ shiftlock solenoid (N110) is adjusted (Fig.2)
^ functional test (Fig. 3) has been performed
- insert shaft bolt (item 6, illustration 37-1099) and shiftlock solenoid bolts with locking compound AMV 200 000

- adjust solenoid by moving in slots (arrows), so that a free-play of 0.3 mm exists between pressure rod and lever, see Fig. 3

^ dimension a = 0.3 mm
Functional test
- place selector lever in P
- apply 12 Volts to solenoid
^ must not be possible to move selector lever into a drive gear
- interrupt solenoid operation
^ selector can now be moved into a drive gear
CAUTION
Be sure pressure rod does not hook onto selector lever.
- place selector lever in N
- apply 12 Volts to solenoid
^ must not be possible to move selector lever into a drive gear
- interrupt solenoid operation
^ selector can now be moved into a drive gear
CAUTION
Be sure pressure rod does not hook onto selector lever.
- adjust play
- install selector lever completely
Lock cable, removing/installing
Note
^ lock cable must not be kinked
^ after installing, adjust cable, see page 37-19
Removing
- remove selector lever handle
- remove cover, cover strip, and program switch if so equipped
- remove center console, see Repair Group 70 loosen bolt for cable anchor, withdraw lock cable from lock lever and pull out of anchor
- remove lock cable from clip (arrow)
- remove trim from ignition switch -
- press out lock cable clip from ignition switch and remove lock cable from cable head
- pull out lock cable
Installing
CAUTION
During installation, be sure that cable:
^ is routed correctly
^ does not bend or kink
- install lock cable in vehicle and secure in clip (arrow)
- position eye of lock cable 1 on lock lever A
position lock cable in cable anchor, as shown
^ do not tighten bolt a for anchor Until lock cable has been adjusted in installed position, see page 37-19
attach lock cable clip to lock cable first
- press lock cable onto ball head
- push lock cable with clip attached, into ignition switch
- route lock cable to steering column
- adjust lock cable in anchor at selector lever, see page 37-19
- install center console
- install cover with gear selector scale
- install gearshift handle
- install ignition switch trim
Lock cable, adjusting
CAUTION
Always adjust lock cable while installed.
- place selector lever in position 1
- turn ignition key to the right, i.e. START position, then release
- adjust play between lever 1 and pin 2 by sliding lock cable sleeve
^ dimension a = 0.7 mm
- tighten bolt for lock cable anchor to 6 N-m (53 in.lb. or 61 cm kg), while maintaining dimension a
- place selector lever in position P
- turn ignition key to last position, and remove
Note
It must NOT be possible:
^ to remove key in any selector lever position except P
^ to shift out of selector lever position P with key removed
