Condition

Oil accumulation in the intake air supply system can occur over time. Severe cases could possibly lead to driveability complaints.

Service

- Inspect the intake air supply system (Air Cleaner housing, Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor housing, and intake air boot) for excessive oil accumulation.

If excessive oil accumulation is present and no driveability condition exists:

- Inspect MAF sensor element for oil contamination.

If no contamination is found:

- Clean intake air system.

Note:
A driveability condition resulting from oil contamination of the MAF sensor element may not necessarily:

^ Show visual signs of oil on the MAF sensor element.

^ store a Diagnostic Trouble Code in memory.

If excessive oil accumulation is observed in the intake air supply system and a driveability condition exists, use the procedure on page 2 to diagnose a possible oil contaminated MAF sensor element.

- With the 1551 Scan Tool connected, select Function 08 display group 00.

Note:
^ Switch off all electrical consumers.

^ Engine coolant temperature must be 80°C (176°F) minimum.

- Read channel 2, MAF sensor signal (engine load).

^ A properly operating MAF sensor will have a displayed value of 26-44 with engine running.

- Replace Mass Air Flow sensor if displayed value is out of range.

Note:
^ If MAF sensor or harness connector terminals are replaced, always apply electrical contact enhancer as described in Technical Bulletin 97-95-01 dated Apr. 11, 1995.
