SUBJECT:
Voluntary Safety Recall UD Check/Replace Right Rear Brake Line
Dear Volkswagen Owner:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Volkswagen has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 1993-95 model Volkswagen Jetta, Golf and GTI vehicles. Our records show that your Volkswagen is one of the vehicles affected by this recall.
DEFECT DESCRIPTION
The brake line servicing the rear wheel on the passenger side of your car could have been improperly routed during assembly and experience chafing damage as the result of axle movement. Such damage could cause brake fluid leakage and impair braking in one of the two brake circuits of the vehicle. Increased stopping distance, when not expected, could result in an accident or injury.
CORRECTION OF DEFECT
Your Volkswagen dealer will inspect the routing of the right rear brake line and replace it if damaged.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Please contact the Service Department of your authorized Volkswagen dealer as soon as possible and schedule an appointment for the repair. The required work may take up to one hour and will, of course, be free of charge. Your dealer will have service instructions and repair parts available on October 15,1998.
PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE
Prior to the time that corrective repairs are completed, please be alert to abnormal braking conditions. You can recognize the failure of one circuit whenever the brake pedal feels soft or can be pushed to the floor. If this happens, step firmly on the pedal and hold the pedal in that position until the car is safely stopped, then contact your dealer immediately.
LEASE VEHICLE
If the vehicle identified in this recall is a leased vehicle and you, the lessor and registered owner receive this notice, please forward this information by first class mail to the lessee.
