Number: 96-03

Date: Nov. 21, 1996

Subject:
Front Brakes, Correcting Squealing Noise

Model(s):
Golf, GTI, Jetta with 2.0L 1993 -->1996 (see VIN below)
(engine code ABA)

Condition

High pitched squealing noise from front brakes is consistently emitted while stopping (especially during light brake pedal applications).

Note:
This noise is not temporary or in frequent like the noise which may be caused by dirt on the brake pads or surface rust on the brake rotors.

Temporary or infrequent noise caused by dirt on the brake pads or surface rust on the brake rotors is unavoidable (no corrective actions are necessary).

Production

New Jurid brake pads installed as of: VIN: 1H_TM106200 incorporate a new damping shim which is attached to backing plate on reverse side of brake pad and wraps around end tabs of brake pad (preventing metal to metal contact between brake pad and caliper).

Service

If a vehicle exhibits this condition DO NOT replace the rotors.

- Replace the front brake pads with Part No: 357 698 151E

- Clean friction surfaces of rotors with coarse sandpaper if necessary.
