Engine Lubrication: Testing and Inspection







SPECIAL TOOLS
^ Oil pressure tester tool No. VAG 1342, or equivalent.
^ LED Tester tool No. VAG 1527B, or equivalent.
^ Adaptor kit tool No. VW 1594, or equivalent.

TEST SEQUENCE
- Remove idle oil pressure switch F22 and screw into tester.
Located in the back of the head
Up to 7/95 prod. date: brown housing - 0.3 bar (4.4 psi)
From 8/95 prod. date: blue housing - 0.25 bar (3.6 psi)
- Screw tester into the cylinder head in place of the oil pressure switch.
- Connect brown wire -3- of tester to ground.
- Connect LED tester to battery positive and to F22, the idle oil pressure switch -A- using jumper wires from adaptor kit.
- LED tester must light up.
- Start engine and slowly raise engine rpm until oil pressure reaches 0.15-0.45 bar (2.1-6.5 psi).
- LED tester must go out.
- If not to specifications, replace oil pressure switch.

- Connect LED tester to 1.8 bar (26 psi) oil pressure switch F1 (white housing) -B-.
- Slowly raise engine RPM, When oil pressure reaches: 1.6-2.0 bar (23-29 psi) LED tester must light up.
- If not to specifications, replace oil pressure switch -F1-.

- Increase engine RPM further:
At 2000rpm and oil temperature of 80°C (176°F, the oil pressure must be at least 2.0 bar (29 psi)
At higher rpm the oil pressure must NOT exceed 7.0 bar (101 psi)
- If necessary replace oil pump cover with pressure relief valve.
