Engine Operation, Checking

NOTE: This check establishes whether the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 recognizes the engine operating conditions.

- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) and enter address word 01 for "engine Electronics" Function 08: "Read measuring value block" (select function with engine idling).

^ Indicated on display:

Select function XX

- Press buttons 0 and 8 to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function.
- Press Q button to confirm input.

^ Indicated on display:

- Press buttons 0 and 4 to enter display group 04.
- Press Q button to confirm input.

^ Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = display fields)

CHECKING SEQUENCE

Idle Speed
- Read 4th character from left in display field 4.

Partial Load
- Read 3rd character from left in display field 4 and gently open throttle.

Wide Open Throttle
- Read 2nd character from left in display field 4 and open throttle fully (rev up).

Acceleration Enrichment
- Read 1st character from left in display field 4 and open throttle fully (rev up to above 3000 RPM).

Over-run
- Raise engine speed above 3000 RPM.
- Read 5th character from left in display field 4.
- Close throttle valve abruptly.

^ Specifications (engine speed above 1900 RPM): 1

NOTE:
- Below 1900 rpm, the ECM will recognize Closed Throttle Position as an idle signal instead of the over-run signal.

- Press --> button.
- Press buttons 0 and 6 to select the Function "End output" function.
- Press Q button to confirm input.
- If the specifications are not obtained:

^ Check and erase Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, and correct malfunctions as necessary.
^ Check Accelerator Pedal mechanism for ease of operation.
^ Check throttle closing damper and adjust if necessary.
^ Check Throttle Position (TP) Sensor (G69).
