Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Memory, reading/erasing

Using VAG 1551 Scan Tool

Requirements
- Ground connections OK (engine ground connection: at cylinder head cover on left and beneath lower section of the intake manifold).




- connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/1 as follows:
- First connect black adaptor cable connector (voltage supply) to black Data Link Connector (DLC).
- display will appear as shown.

Note: Do not connect the white adaptor cable connector if there is no display. Instead, check the voltage supply for scan tool, Refer to VAG 1551 Voltage Supply, Checking.

- connect white adaptor cable connector to the white/brown Data Link Connector (DLC) 2.
- The blue connector is not used

Note: The 16 pin DLC connector was phased in during the 1994 model year. If vehicle has the 16 pim DLC, connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG 1551/3 adaptor harness.


- start engine and let idle

If engine does NOT start
- switch ON ignition

- press 1 button to select operating mode "Rapid data transfer"
- display will appear as shown

[ Enter address word XX ]

- switch on the printer using the print button
- lamp in print button lights

When the printer is switched ON
- stored malfunctions are automatically printed out in sequence

- press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics".
- display will appear as shown

- press Q button to enter input
- press -> button

[ Rapid data transfer HELP ]
[ Select function XX ]

- press 0 and 2 buttons to select function 02 "Check DTC Memory".
- display will appear as shown

[ Enter address word XX ]

- press 0 and 2 buttons to select function 02 "Check DTC Memory".
- press Q button to enter input
- the number of stored malfunctions or "No malfunction recognized" is indicated on display

If no malfunction has been recognized:
- press -> button
- display will appear as shown

[ Select function XX ]

- press 0 and 5 buttons to select function 05 "Erase DTC Memory".
- press Q button to enter input
- display will appear as shown

[ Rapid data transfer ]
[ DTC Memory erased ]

Note: If the engine was switched off between reading and erasing the DTC Memory, the DTC Memory is not erased.

- press -> button
- display will appear as shown

[ Select function XX ]

- press 0 and 6 buttons to select function 06 "End output".
- display will appear as shown

- press Q button to enter input
- locate and eliminate any malfunctions printed out using the Diagnotic Trouble Code Table. Testing and Inspection


- perform a test drive of at least ten minutes during which:
- coolant temperature exceeds 80°C (176°F) for at least 3 minutes
- accelerator pedal is briefly but completedly floored at a speed greater than 4600 rpm
- vehicle is accelerated at half throttle for approx. 4 secongs in 4th gear from a speed of roughly 30 mph

- read and erase DTC Memory again
