Automatic Transmission 096/098, Variations
Model(s):
Golf, Jetta, Passat, Corrado, Eurovan, From m.y. 1993
Condition
Differences between the Phase 0 transmission and the Phase I 4-speed Automatic Transmission introduced during the 1993 model year production, (approximately January, 1993) in the Golf, Jetta, Passat, Corrado, and Eurovan.
Phase I is different from Phase 0 in the following areas:
^ Modified K1 and K2 clutch assemblies to quicker applications and release.
^ Modified K1 and K3 clutch assemblies now have apply pistons that form a double chamber.
^ New planetary gear assembly with revised gear ratios.
^ Revised valve body for improved shifting during low engine load.
^ New shift points programmed into transmission control module.
^ Deletion of Eco/Sport switch.
The original Phase 0 transmission was designed to shift from 3rd to 4th in several steps.
The Phase 1 transmission can shift directly from 3rd to 4th in one step.
The Phase I transmission has no major externally visual differences from the earlier versions of the 096 and 098 transmissions except the multi-function switch. The valve body and transmission control module have also been revised.
Important:
The Phase 1 transmission valve body and control module cannot be installed in vehicles with the earlier transmission.
The Phase 1 transmission can only be identified by the transmission code letters -1- stamped on the transmission case, (the code letters also appear on the vehicle data plates).
The transmission control module can be identified by using the VAG 1551.
Identify which type of transmission and TCM you are working on before doing any repairs to the transmission.
Note:
Shift quality is different between the Phase 0 and Phase I transmissions. They should never be compared to each other for diagnosis of shifting complaints.
