Idle Speed: Testing and Inspection
IDLE SPEED, IDLE SPEED BOOST AND ENGINE GOVERNED SPEED, ADJUSTING
Checking and adjustment conditions
- Oil temperature 60 °C (140 °F) minimum.
- Do NOT engage Cold Start Accelerator cable.
- All electrical consumers must be switched off.
Measure engine speed using VAG 1367 Engine Tester via TDC sender or by using VW 1324 adaptor.
Idle speed
- Adjust idle speed by turning the screw on the idle speed adjusting lever -1- (vehicles with A/C: turn stop screw 2)
Specification: 900 ± 30 rpm
NOTE: If by turning the screw on the adjustment lever -1- the idle speed cannot be set below 930 rpm because adjustment lever -3- is against stop screw -2-, continue as follows:
- - Release lower Idle speed stop screw -2- lock nut and turn screw back.
- Set idle speed to 900 rpm at adjusting lever -1-.
- Turn stop screw -2- until it contacts adjusting lever -3- and then tighten the lock nut.
Idle speed boost, checking and (if necessary) adjusting
- When pulling the Cold Start Accelerator (CSA) cable out to the first stage, engine speed will increase by approx. 60 rpm.
With the cable fully pulled out, engine speed must increase to 1050 ± 50 rpm.
If Idle speed is not to specification 1050 ± 50 with cable pulled fully out:
- - Release lock nut on stop screw (arrow) and with CSA cable fully pulled out set idle speed boost to 1050 rpm by turning stop screw.
- - Lock stop screw.
Engine governed speed (no load)
- - Set engine speed at Wide Open Throttle using adjusting screw (arrow).
Specification: 5200 ± 100 rpm
- Lock adjusting screw.
