Tie Rod: Service and Repair
Tie rods, removing/installingRemoving
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the rack and pinion, DO NOT attempt to remove tie rods from an installed gear.
Seal hydraulic line openings with plastic bag and adhesive tape
Seal hydraulic ports in steering gear, as follows:
port (1) install Part No. 113 301 229 A (plug)
port (2) install Part No. N 904 674 01 (banjo bolt)
Note: As necessary add 16 mm (5/32 in) diameter seals
CAUTION: Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest information
Clean power steering gear
Loosen hose clamp and position boot aside
Inspect for and remove any metal shavings etc.
Clamp steering gear rack assembly in vise
Use soft jaw covers to protect rack teeth
Remove tie rods
Note: If parts are to be used again, protect threads from damage at reassembly. Remove old locking compound from stud in tie rod end, and threaded hole in rack, as follows:
Use die (M14 x 1.5), or wire brush, to clean stud in tie rod end
Check condition of threads, and renew parts as necessary
CAUTION:When starting the die onto the threads, do not tilt the die. If turning motion is difficult or metal shavings form, the thread has been distorted.
Seal off opening in the steering gear (arrow)
Use tap (M14 x 1.5) to clean threaded hole in rack
Clean oil/grease residue from threads using approved nitro thinners, or L160, or equivalents
Clean threads with compressed air
Installing
Check/adjust tie rod length, left side only
All except vehicles with VR6 engine:
a = 395.0 ±1mm (15.5 ±0.039 in)
Vehicles with VR6 engine:
a = 413.1 ±1 mm (16.36 ±0.039 in)
Note:
When left tie rod length is disturbed by removal/replacement of the tie rod end, check/adjust the length to specifications.
When replacing the left tie rod always check/adjust the length of the new part before installing.
Apply locking compound (D6 or equivalent), to threaded hole (arrow)
Apply only one drop of locking compound in second thread of rack
Excessive compound will make subsequent removal difficult
CAUTION: Avoid getting locking compound on toothed rack.
Tighten tie rod
Specified torque = 70 Nm (52 ft lb), always verify with a torque wrench
Examine boot for wear (slits, cracks) and check sealing surface for cleanliness
Turn tie rod ball joint stud to installation position
Install boot
Connect pressure compensating line
Ensure correct seating
Seat boot (arrows) without damaging sticker A
Tension hose clamps with pliers V.A.G. 1275 (KD 424)
B genuine hose clamps use Part No. 357 422 837 only
CAUTION: Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest information.
Install steering boots without twisting them (arrows)
Adjust toe on right tie rod only
