A/C System - R-134 Replacement and System Capacities

GROUP: 87

NUMBER: 94-01

DATE: Aug 1, 1994

SUBJECT:
R-134a Refrigerant System Components, Replacing and System Capacities

MODEL(s):
Golf III, Jetta III, Passat, Corrado, EuroVan From m.y. 1993

This Bulletin Supercedes Technical Bulletin Group 87, No. 93-01, issued May 10, 1993

CONDITION

Replacement A/C compressors, evaporators and condensers are filled with Nitrogen.

Replacement A/C compressors are filled with the total refrigerant oil (PAG oil) quantity needed for the entire refrigerant system (except for EuroVan models with two evaporators).

SERVICE

If Nitrogen gas does NOT escape when the caps are removed from a new compressor, evaporator or condenser, the component may be leaking, do not install.

Always replace the receiver drier whenever the refrigerant system has been discharged due to leaking or damaged components.. Keep refrigerant system and replacement components sealed for as long as possible to minimize the chance of dirt and moisture contamination.

If the system has been discharged due to a damaged or leaking component (hose, pipe, compressor, evaporator, condenser, etc..), flush the refrigerant system first with compressed air, then with nitrogen (available locally). This will remove the refrigerant oil which may be saturated with moisture.

If a new compressor is installed, do not add any additional oil (except for EuroVan models with two evaporators) as the total amount of oil required is already in the compressor.

Follow all Cautions and Warnings listed in the Repair Manual, Repair Group 87 when working on an R-134a A/C system.

Refrigerant R-134a

Obtain R-134a refrigerant from a local A/C supplier under one of the following names:

^ R-134a
^ Tetrafluoroethane
^ CH2F CF3
^ SUVA(R) TRANS A/C
^ ARCTON(R) 134a

Note
R-134a refrigerant is packaged in different containers. One variation is SUVA(R) COLD MP used only for commercial applications. This type of R-134a is sold in cylinders using a 1/4 flare fitting which will not connect to the 1/2"-16 ACME fittings used on the vehicle and servicing equipment. Use only R-134a which comes in containers having the correct type of service fitting.

REFRIGERANT R-134A

Use only the correct quantity of R-134a as specified.

REFRIGERANT OIL

Use only the correct type and quantity of refrigerant (PAG) oil as specified in the chart following.

Caution
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest parts information.

REFRIGERANT OIL DISTRIBUTION

With the A/C system operating, the refrigerant (PAG) oil is distributed throughout the A/C system as follows:

Oil distribution in systems with one evaporator

Oil distribution in system with two evaporators (EuroVan only)
