Clutch: Adjustments
Clutch cable adjusting mechanism, checking function and repairing
(5-Speed Manual Transmission 020)
Checking
Clutch cable adjusting mechanism must be undamaged.
- Depress clutch pedal down to stop at least 5 times.
- Move clutch release lever approx. 10 mm (0.4 in.) in direction opposite to that of normal travel (arrow).
Clutch release lever must move freely.
Note:
Always depress the clutch pedal at least 5 times before repeating the operational check.
Repairing
If the clutch release lever cannot be moved in the return direction, even after the clutch pedal has been operated several times, it is possible that the mechanism has been damaged by mishandling (e.g. pulling on the cable casing).
A malfunctioning adjusting mechanism will cause improper adjustment leading to clutch slippage and premature clutch wear.
Note:
- Replacement of the cable is to be avoided.
- The clutch adjusting mechanism can be made to be operational again as described in the procedure that follows.
- Mount engine support bar 10-222A using adapter hooks 10-222 A/2.
- Depress clutch pedal and hold (second technician required).
Clutch release lever on transmission is now in operating position.
- Lock release lever in position as shown using adapter hooks 10-222 A/2.
- Pull clutch pedal back up to clutch-released position.
- Pull clutch cable down (in direction of arrow) until adjusting mechanism can be compressed in area of dust boot -A-.
- Return clutch release lever to clutch-released position.
- Repeat functional check.
- Remove engine support bar 10-222 A and adapter hooks.
