Engine Operating Mode Check
ENGINE OPERATING MODE, CHECKING
NOTE: This check establishes whether the Motronic ECM J220 recognizes the engine operating condition.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) or vehicle system tester VAG 1552 with VAG 1551/3 adapter cable
Test conditions
- Engine oil temperature min. 80 °C (176 °F)
Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552) and insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01. Carry out selection at idle. Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

Select function XX
- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Press -0-, -0- and -4- to input display group number 004.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Indicated on display (1, 2, 3 and 4 = Display fields)

Display for operating modes:
Overrun mode:
- Increase engine speed to above 3000 RPM.
- Close throttle abruptly.
As long as engine speed is above 1500 RPM:
- 5th position from left must display 1; Display: 0000_
NOTE: Below 1500 RPM, idle speed will be recognized.
Idle (closed throttle position):
- 4th position from left must display 1; Display: 000_0
Part throttle:
- Rev up evenly.
- 3rd position from left must display 1; Display: 00_00
Wide open throttle:
- Floor accelerator pedal and release.
- 2nd position from left must briefly display 1; Display: 0_000
Acceleration enrichment:
- Floor accelerator (rev-up to above 3000 RPM).
- 1st position from left must display 1; Display: _0000
- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
If the specifications are not attained:
- Check and erase DTC memory, and eliminate malfunctions if necessary. With Manufacturer's Scan Tool
- Check accelerator pedal mechanism for ease of operation.
