Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

NOTES:
- Stored malfunctions can be displayed via the VAG 1551 or 1552 Scan Tool. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Print-outs are only possible with the VAG 1551 Scan Tool, the VAG 1552 does not have a printer

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adaptor cable VAG 1551/3

Test Conditions:
- Battery voltage OK
- Fuse 21 OK
- Engine and transmission Ground connections OK





Connecting Sequence:
- Unclip and remove Data Link Connector (DLC) cover
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adapter cable VAG 1551/3
Display appears as shown:

VAG - On Board Diagnostic HELP
1-Rapid data transfer*
2-Blink code output*

* Appears alternately

If display remains blank, check Scan Tool operating instructions

After Scan Tool has been connected:
- Depending upon desired function, switch ON ignition or
- Start engine
Refer to "Testing Functions of On Board Diagnostic II" table.
- Operate Scan Tool taking display information into account
- Press 1 button to select "Rapid data transfer" mode
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "Engine electronics"
- Press Q button to enter input
Display appears as shown:

VAG 1551 Scan Tool will display the ECM identification, the following example shows the coding breakdown:
- 028906021DF = Engine Control Module (ECM) part number (for up-to-date ECM versions see latest parts information)
- 1.9l = Engine capacity
- R4 = Type of engine (4 Cyl in-line engine)
- EDC = Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
- G = Equipped with CCS (Tempomat)
- SG = Transmission type (manual)
(AG = automatic transmission)
- 0602 = ECM software version
- Coding 0002 coding variant
- WSC = VAG Dealership number
