Engine Speed Sensor: Testing and Inspection

The engine speed sensor provides engine speed reference. If the component fails, the engine continues running using an emergency program. The Needle Lift sensor G80 is the emergency substitute default sensor.

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- VAG 1598/18 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter (or equivalent)
- VW 1594 adaptor kit
- Wiring diagram

Test Sequence:
- Switch OFF ignition
- Disconnect engine speed sensor harness connector
- Connect Fluke 83 multimeter between terminals 1 and 2 of sensor connector

- Measure resistance
Specification: 1000 to 1500 Ohms

If specification not obtained:
- Replace engine speed sensor G28
- Display the readiness code

If DTC memory was erased:
- Create readiness code again

If specification obtained:

- Connect Test Box VAG 1598/18 to ECM wiring harness

- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box and 3 pin connector using Wiring diagram
terminal 1 + socket 33
terminal 2 + socket 8
terminal 3 + socket
Wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum.

- Check wiring at 3 pin connector for short circuit to one another using wiring diagram
Specification: Infinite Ohms

If wiring OK:
- Replace TDI Engine Control Module (ECM) J248
- Display the readiness code

If DTC memory was erased:
- Create readiness code again
