Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST), connectingSpecial tools, testers and auxiliary items:
VAG1551 Scan Tool with VAG1551/3 adaptor
NOTE: When malfunctions have been recognized, the stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) can be displayed using the VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST).
Print-outs are only possible with the VAG 1551 Scan Tool, the VAG 1552 does not have a printer
Test Conditions:
Battery voltage OK
Fuse 21 OK
Engine and transmission Ground connections OK
Connecting Sequence:
Open ashtray and remove, then slide cover for Data Link Connector (DLC) to the left (arrow)
Connect VAG1551 Scan Tool with VAG1551/3 adapter
Display appears as shown:
VAG - On Board Diagnostic HELP
1-Rapid data transfer*
2-Blink code output*
* Operating modes 1 and 2 are displayed alternately
If display remains blank:
Refer to Scan Tool operating instructions
Depending upon the desired function:
Refer to Selectable functions table VAG1551/VAG1552 Scan Tool, Selectable Functions
Switch ignition on, or start engine.
Operate scan tool according to directions on display.
Press -1- button to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.
Press buttons -0- and -1- to select the "Engine Electronics" address word 01, and press -Q- button to confirm input.
Display appears as shown: (Diesel DFI ECM identification)

Coding 0002 WSC XXXXX
VAG 1551 Scan Tool will display the ECM identification, the following example shows the coding breakdown:
- 028906021DF = Diesel DFI ECM Part No. (for most up-to-date ECM versions see latest parts information)
- 1.9l = Engine capacity (1.9 liter)
- R4 = Type of engine (4 Cyl in-line engine)
- EDC = Fuel Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
- G = Equipped with CCS (Tempomat)
- SG = Transmission type - manual (AG = automatic)
- 0602 = Diesel DFI ECM software version
- Coding 0002 = Control module coding
- WSC = Dealership number
- Press -> button
