The engine and transaxle (powertrain) are removed as an assembly through the front of these vehicles by removing the front end panels (lock carrier) and bumper.
1. Obtain audio coded anti-theft code.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
3. Remove air cleaner and ducting as necessary.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect drive axles from transaxle and support them aside.
5. Disconnect exhaust system and position aside.
6. Disconnect necessary lines, electrical connectors, clamps, cables, components and hoses to allow removal of lock carrier, Figs. 7 through 9.
7. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect additional components necessary to allow condenser with radiator and fans, receiver drier and compressor to be removed and supported aside without disconnecting lines, Figs. 10 & 11.
8. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect any additional components necessary to allow pump and lines to be removed and supported aside without disconnecting lines.
9. Remove lock carrier, Figs. 7 through 9 then radiator, supporting aside A/C and power steering components, if equipped, Figs. 10 & 11
10. Remove any additional drive belts and components needed for removal clearance.
11. Disconnect clutch cable and gearshift mechanism.
12. Disconnect any remaining lines, cables, electrical connectors, hoses or components necessary to allow powertrain removal.
13. Connect lifting bar tool No. 2024A, or equivalent, Figs. 12 & 13, suitably adjusted to keep powertrain unit balanced during removal of engine.
14. Attach suitable lifting equipment to lifting bar, then raise powertrain slightly to relieve pressure from mounts, then disconnect mounts.
15. Remove powertrain from vehicle.
16. Place powertrain on a suitable surface, then remove starter and transaxle to engine bolts and nuts.
17. Remove transaxle from engine.
18. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten to specifications.
b. Ensure alignment dowels are in place when installing transaxle to engine.
c. Lubricate transaxle input shaft splines, and if equipped, release bearing guide sleeve with a suitable grease.
d. Ensure drive axles are properly positioned during powertrain installation.
e. Ensure locating tabs of right rear and front motor mounts are engaged into recesses of mount brackets, Fig. 15.
f. Prior to tightening motor mount bolts, shake powertrain unit to relieve any stresses.
g. Ensure correct adjustment of headlamps.
h. Ensure correct adjustment of all cables.
i. Replace any cable ties cut during powertrain removal with suitable equivalents.
j. Reset audio coded anti-theft system as outlined under "Precautions.
