Programming and Relearning

If the appropriate vehicle code is not displayed or if the ECM has been replaced, code the ECM as follows.

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool with adaptor cable VAG 1551/3

Work Sequence:
- Connect VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) Scan Tool
- Switch ON ignition
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select address word 01 "engine electronics"
Display will appear as shown:

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press 0 and 7 buttons to select Function 07 "Code ECM"
- Press Q button to enter input
Display will appear as shown:

Code ECM HELP
Input code number XXXXX (0-32000)

- Enter appropriate code number for this vehicle
- Press Q button to enter input
VAG 1551 Scan Tool will display the ECM identification
Display will appear as shown:

Coding 00001 WSC XXXXX

Coding For vehicles with
00001 Automatic transmission
00002 Manual transmission

NOTE: Ensure that the code number entered corresponds to the code number displayed.

- Switch ignition OFF and then ON again
Display will appear as shown:

028906021 DF 1.9l R4 EDC G00SG 0602 ->
Coding 00002 WSC XXXXX

- New transmission version coding must appear in display

NOTE: To activate the coding, switch the ignition OFF and then ON. If, after entering the valid code, the ignition is not switched OFF and ON, the DTC "ECM incorrectly coded" will be stored in DTC memory and cannot be erased.

- Press -> button
Display will appear as shown:

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06 "End data transfer"
- Press Q button to enter input

NOTE: The coding (example) entered and shown on the display will not be used by the Engine Control Module UNTIL the ignition has been switched OFF once.

Incorrect coding leads to:
- Engine running malfunctions
- Increased fuel consumption
- Malfunctions stored in DTC memory which did not actually occur
- Reduced transmission life
