Static Timing, Checking and Adjusting

STATIC TIMING, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING

Checking/adjusting conditions
- Drive belt tension properly adjusted
- Cold start accelerator knob must be pushed in (operating lever for injection pump to stop)

- Set engine to TDC (Cyl. 1).

Engine installed:
- Turn crankshaft until TDC mark on flywheel is aligned with reference mark on clutch housing.

Engine removed:
- Thread in adjusting tool as illustrated.
- Set adjusting tool to 5.0 mm.
- Reference point: graduation on left side of vernier scale -arrow A-.
- Rotate crankshaft until TDC mark on flywheel is aligned with tip of adjusting tool -arrow B-.

Checking and adjusting
- Unscrew plug from injection pump head.

CAUTION:
- Always use a new seal when installing plug.
- Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ft lb).
- If leaks persist, the plug may be tightened to a maximum at 25 Nm (18 ft lb).

- Thread in adapter and small dial indicator (measuring range 0-3 mm) in place of plug. Preload dial indicator to about 2.5 mm.
- Slowly rotate crankshaft counter-clockwise (opposite direction of normal engine rotation) until dial indicator pointer no longer moves.
- Set dial indicator to "0" with approx. 1 mm preload.
- Rotate crankshaft in direction of engine rotation (clockwise) until TDC marking on flywheel is aligned with reference mark on clutch housing.
- Read plunger stroke on dial indicator.

Specifications:
- Checking: 0.73 - 0.87 mm stroke
- Adjusting: 0.80 ± 0.02 mm stroke

CAUTION: Do not adjust the injection pump if the measurement fails within the tolerance range specified for "Checking".

- To adjust, slacken the three bolts on injection pump bracket and mounting bolt for rear support.
- Adjust until dial indicator reading matches specified setting by turning injection pump with adjusting lever 3210.

Specification:
- Adjusting: 0.80 ± 0.02 mm stroke

- Tighten mounting bolts.
- Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 ft lb)

Valve timing, checking
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- Check camshaft drive belt tension.

- Set engine to TDC for Cyl. 1 cylinder -arrow-.
- Setting bar 2065A must fit into slot in camshaft.

If not:
- Rotate camshaft until setting bar can be installed.

Center setting bar as follows:
- Turn camshaft, with setting bar in place, until one end of setting bar touches cylinder head.
- Measure gap at other end of setting bar with feeler gauge.
- Select feeler gauge that is one-half of measured gap, and temporarily install between setting bar and cylinder head.
- Turn camshaft so that setting bar is resting against feeler gauge, then insert second feeler gauge of same thickness at other end between setting bar and cylinder head.

Adjust valve timing as follows:
- Loosen camshaft sprocket bolt one-half turn. Detach camshaft sprocket from tapered end of camshaft by tapping with hammer (using drift through hole in rear belt guard).

- Lock injection pump sprocket into position using pin 2064.
- Check TDC (Cyl. 1) and, if necessary, rotate crankshaft until TDC mark on flywheel is aligned with reference mark on clutch housing, see above.
- Install drive belt and remove locking pin from injection pump sprocket.

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the camshaft drive belt in order to set the injection pump sprocket in position and align the TDC marking on the flywheel.

- Remove pin 2064.
- Adjust drive belt tension, refer to "Diesel Injection Pump Replacing/Installing". Service and Repair
- Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to 45 Nm (33 ft lb).
- Remove setting bar 2065A.
- Check injection pump static timing see above.
