Starter does not crank
Note: The starter is activated through the alarm system. Check alarm system for proper operation before troubleshooting starter. Refer to Antitheft and Alarm Systems - Testing and Inspection - Procedures Testing and Inspection
Test requirements
- Starter solenoid terminals and ground strap connections between engine, body and battery must be tight and must not be corroded/oxidized.
- Battery voltage OK, battery charged
- Use digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119) for all electrical checks.
Solenoid voltage, measuring
1. Terminal 30 - B+, from battery
2. Terminal 15a
3. Terminal 50 - from starter switch
4. Connection for field windings
If fault does not lie in anti-theft system or starter, check for basic engine operational requirements; ie: fuel pressure, fuel quantity, injector pulse, ignition spark.
