Replace Clutch Disc
1997-98 Model Jetta Volkswagen TDI Vehicles

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of a dealer inventory service action involving a small number of 1997 and 1998 model Jetta TDI vehicles in dealer inventory. Do not sell any vehicle affected by this action until the corrective action is completed.

NOTE:Volkswagen of America, Inc. will not reimburse under this action any duplicate repair work.





Model Numbers

Problem

It is possible that some of the affected vehicles could develop an intermittent "rattling" noise with the transmission in neutral and the engine idling.

Corrective Action

Replace the clutch disc with new part number 028 141 035C.

Program Verification

It is important that you check your V-Crest system for the "open" TX action code prior to performing any work to ensure that the vehicle is affected by this action. We will not reimburse you for any corrective work performed on a vehicle which is not affected by this action.

Parts Supply

We will automatically ship to you a supply of new clutch discs, part number 028 141 035C, according to your present vehicle inventory status.

Work Procedure

^ Open Hood

^ Record pre-set radio stations, obtain radio code then disconnect battery

- Disconnect gear shift linkage, remove weight, brackets, speed sensor connector, wires, etc. from transmission (It is not necessary to remove the cables from the bracket.)

^ Remove clutch slave cylinder and lay to one side (do not open clutch hydraulic system)

^ Install engine support tool 10-222 A and partially take up engine weight; remove starter and upper bolts between engine and transmission, and remove center bolt on all engine and transmission mounts, then remove transmission mount from transmission

^ Remove sound dampening pan; disconnect drive axles from transmission, secure right axle shaft aside as high as possible then remove left axle shaft

^ Remove oil pan cover and lower cover plate between engine and transmission

^ Use jack with transmission support 3282 or VAG 1383 transmission jack to support transmission, remove lower bolts between engine and transmission, and remove transmission from the vehicle

- Remove clutch pressure plate and clutch disc from the engine

^ Install new clutch disc (028 141 035 C) using centering tool 3190A while reinstalling the pressure plate

^ Reinstall transmission and other components in opposite order of disassembly

^ Test drive to verify proper clutch/transmission operation
