Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- Scan Tool VAG 1551/1552 using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3

NOTE: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG 1551, however the 1552 is not equipped with a printer.

Test Conditions:
- Battery voltage OK
- Fuse 22 OK
- Ground connections on engine and transmission OK





Work Sequence:
- Unclip and remove Data Link Connector cover
- Connect Scan Tool using adaptor cable VAG 1551/3
Display will appear as shown:

VAG - On Board Diagnostic HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer*
2 - Blink Code Output*.

* Appears alternately

NOTE: If the display remains blank:

After Scan Tool has been connected, depending upon desired function:
- Switch ON ignition
or
- Start engine, see table "Testing Functions of On Board Diagnostic System (OBD D)". Testing Functions of On Board Diagnostic System (OBD D)
- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed information into account
- Press 1 button to select "Rapid data transfer,"
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address Word 01 "engine electronics"
- Press Q button to enter input

Coding 0000 WSC0000

028906021BK = ECM part number
1.9 litre = Engine capacity
R4 = Type of engine (4 Cyl. in-line engine)
EDC = Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
SG = Manual transmission
AG = Automatic transmission
D0O = Control module software version
Coding 0000 not required at present
WSC = VW Dealership number
