Steering Column Assembly OverviewWARNING: The airbag is a dangerous device if handled improperly. Before starting any work on the steering components of an airbag-equipped car, read the safety precautions, refer to Airbags and Seatbelts.
NOTE:
Airbag functional check and On Board Diagnostic (OBD), refer to Airbags and Seatbelts.
All parts marked with an asterisk (1) can be preassembled outside of the vehicle.
Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts
Do not attempt to repair damaged steering components by welding or straightening
1. Cover Plate
2. Hex Nut 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
3. Steering Wheel
Install in central position
4. Airbag Unit
Removing and installing, refer to Airbags and Seatbelts.

Removing and installing airbag spiral spring, refer to Airbags and Seatbelts.
6. Hex Socket Head Bolt 9 Nm (82 inch lbs.)
Always replace

8. Splined Adapter Sleeve
Removing/Installing Multi Tooth Adapter Sleeve
9. Spring
10. Steering Column Switch/Steering Lock Housing
Distance between steering column switch and steering wheel is not adjustable
11. Upper Trim
12. Support Ring (1) With Washer
13. Steering Column (1)
Remove by pulling upwards out of column tube
14. Hex Bolt 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
15. Hex Nut 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
16. Hex Nut 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
17. Steering Column Universal Joint
18. Spring
19. Lower Steering Column Bearing
Pull in with puller tool No. VW 771, or equivalent, and large washer
Drive out downward with a tube
20. Washer
21. Shear Bolt
Tighten until head shears off
Drill out to remove
22. Column Tube

Length Of Steering Column, Checking
The small metal lug on the lower section must be visible in the hole in the upper section (arrow).
If necessary pull both sections firmly apart onto stop or press together.
Steering Column, Pre-assembling
Carefully clamp the lower section of the steering column in a vice so that the upper part is supported on the jaws.
