Cylinder Head Torque & Sequence

Tightening torque - Cylinder head to cylinder block

Note: Always replace the cylinder head mounting bolts. They are stretch bolts designed to be used only once.

Tighten cylinder head in sequence shown:

Tighten initially using a torque wrench:
Stage I 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Stage II 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.)
Turn further using a hand wrench:
Stage III 1/4 turn (90°)
Stage IV 1/4 turn (90°)
Stage V (AAZ diesel engines with composition head gasket only) additional 1/4 turn (90°)

NOTE: AAZ Diesel engines, (Stage V) if the old style composition head gasket is used, run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Then retorque the cylinder head bolts (Stage V) in proper sequence an additional 1/4 turn (90°). AAZ and AHU Diesel engines that use the newer style metal gasket DO NOT require this step. Retorqueing after the 1000 miles is NOT needed for either style of head gasket.
