Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Significance

If malfunctions which can adversely affect exhaust emissions are recognized by the Engine Control Module (ECM), they will be indicated by the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lighting up.




Location of MIL Lamp:
1. Malfunction Indicator Lamp
2. Glow plug indicator light

NOTES:
The Glow plug indicator light has a dual function:
- Blinking: malfunctions are recognized which affect vehicle handling. Stored malfunctions can be displayed via the VAG 1551 or 1552 Scan Tool. Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Permanently ON when the ignition is switched ON: Normal function when starting a cold Diesel engine.

The MIL lamp is switched ON when malfunctions which could cause exhaust emissions to exceed specification are recognized, in which case, check DTC memory
