VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST)

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code
DLC = Data-Link Connector (Diagnostic socket)
MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp


WARNING:
- Check airbag system wiring by VISUAL INSPECTION only.
- Do not perform electrical continuity tests or measurements to ignition circuits.
- Check wiring routing only with ignition switched OFF.


Test Requirements:
- All fuses OK according to wiring diagram.
- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK (at least 9 V).

Connecting:

NOTE:
- The airbag system is switched off during the On Board Diagnostic.
- The DTC Memory can only be erased after repairs have been performed and the DTC Memory has been interrogated.
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove cover for DLCs located to right of ignition switch.





- Connect Scan Tool VAG 1551 with adapter harness VAG 1551/3.

V.A.G. Display:





- Asterisk items are displayed alternately.

NOTE:
- If the display remains blank, check VAG 1551 voltage supply per wiring diagram.
- Additional operating in formation can be printed out depending on the program by pressing the HELP key of VAG 1551.
- The -> key is used for advancing the program sequence.
- The PRINT key is used for switching on the printer (warning lamp in key lights up).
- Switch on ignition.
- Press key -1- for "Rapid data transfer" mode.

- Press keys -1 - and -5- (the address word of the vehicle system to be tested "Airbag" is entered with 15).

- Confirm entry with the Q key.

- The Airbag Control Module J234 identification number is displayed:

NOTE: If one of the messages shown in the next four images appears in the display, the possible causes of the fault can be printed out with the HELP key.

- (The ignition must be switched on!)

- Faults have occurred at the start of or during the program (external sources of faults?).

- Check diagnostic harnesses and also voltage supply and ground connection.
- After correcting the possible causes of the fault, once again enter the address word 15 for "Airbag" and confirm with the Q key.

- Shown after entering the address word 15.
- The following appears in the display:

- The Airbag Control Module J234 identification number is displayed.
- Press -> key.

NOTE:
A list of the possible functions is printed out after pressing the HELP key:

- 01 - Control module version
- 02 - Interrogating DTC Memory
- 05 - Erasing DTC Memory
- 06 - Ending output

Only the functions listed can be used at present for OBD.
After pressing the -> key, the V.A.G 1551 program returns to the initial position.
