Removal

GENERAL:
When replacing the cylinder head or the cylinder head gasket, it is recommended that the old coolant be flushed out and new coolant added. This will help ensure that any metal shavings and contaminants are removed from the engine and the cooling system. Note that the cylinder head bolts are stretch-type fasteners and should not be reused.

TO REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD:
1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal from the battery.

NOTE: Be sure to have the anti-theft radio code on hand before disconnecting the battery.

2. Disconnect the intake air duct from the throttle body on the intake manifold.
3. Drain the coolant.

WARNING: Hot coolant can scald. Drain the coolant only with the engine cold.

4. Remove the camshaft drive belt.
5. Disconnect the fuel injector harness connectors. Disconnect the throttle cable and harness connectors from the throttle body.
6. Disconnect and label the hoses and wires connected to the throttle body, the intake manifold and cylinder head.

CAUTION: Fuel will be expelled when disconnecting hoses. Wrap a cloth around the fuel line fittings when disconnecting the lines. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Have a fire extinguisher handy.

7. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
8. Disconnect all coolant hoses from the outlets on the cylinder head.
9. Disconnect the spark plug connectors from the spark plugs.
10. Remove the cylinder head cover.

Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

11. Gradually and evenly loosen the cylinder head bolts, beginning with the outer bolts and working toward the center. Discard the head bolts.
12. Remove the cylinder head. If the head is stuck, use a soft-faced mallet or pry gently with a wooden stick to loosen it.
