Readiness code, creating

- Study following chart. Pay special attention to function bits 5, 6, 7 and 8.






Note for vehicles >m.y. 96 only: If using the procedure to verify a repair, go to the appropriate work step and verify that repair, but if creating a readiness code, follow the work steps in sequence and do not switch the ignition off until the sequence has been completed.

NOTE: - If a particular bit that you are watching in the Readiness code is obtained sooner than the time specified in the procedure, you can immediately proceed to the next work step.
- An "x" in the diagnostic status means the display can be either a "0" or a "1"
- There must not be a malfunction stored in DTC memory and there must not be any malfunctions detected during diagnostic test!

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items
- VAG 1551/1552 scan tool with VAG 1551/3 adapter cable.

Test Sequence

WARNING: When driving or riding in an airbag-equipped vehicle:
- Never hold test equipment in your hands or lap while the vehicle is in motion. Objects between you and the airbag can increase the risk of injury in an accident.
- Secure tools or test equipment on passenger side floor where it can be safely read by the second technician.


- Connect VAG 1551/1552 scan tool and select "Engine Electronics" address word 01.
- When doing this, the ignition must be switched on.

- Press buttons -0- and -2- to select "Check DTC Memory" function 02.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

The number of malfunctions stored or "No DTC recognized" will be shown on the display.

- Locate and eliminate malfunctions printed out as per DTC table.
- Press -> button.

Diagnostic Test: Leak Check For EVAP System.

NOTE: Not all vehicles have this system installed. If this system is not found on the vehicle you are working with; skip this work step.

- Start engine and allow to idle.

- Test drive per the following conditions.

Road Test Procedure

NOTE: Avoid deceleration fuel cut-off during this diagnostic test. It causes the three way catalytic converter to store oxygen, diagnostic test will then be blocked for at least 10 seconds.

- Transmission Range 2 or 2nd gear must be selected
- Engine speed must be kept between 2500 and 3500 RPM
- Continue test drive until specifications are attained
- Check Specifications During Test Drive (second Technician Necessary).
- See Airbag Warning At The Begining Of Test Procedure.

Diagnostic test: Fuel adaptation during closed throttle position Test conditions.
- Bring vehicle to stationary position and let idle.
- All electrical consumers switched OFF.

Diagnostic test: Oxygen Sensor aging (regulating frequency extended)

- All electrical consumers switched OFF (coolant fan must not run).

Work Step: 12
Diagnostic test: Fuel tank vent system (EVAP canister purge regulator valve).
- Vehicle stationary
- All electrical consumers switched OFF (coolant fan not running during check).
- A/C switched OFF

NOTE: Engine must not be under load during the diagnostic test or sequence will be interrupted and not started again until engine is revved up.

NOTE: For work step 12, look for either display field 2 or display field 3 specification fulfillment, but not both. Fulfillment of either display is acceptable.

If readiness code NOT OK:
- Perform optional work steps 14 through 20.

Diagnostic test: Vehicle Speed Sensor.

- Perform test drive and fulfill the following conditions:
- Transmission Range 2 or 2nd gear selected.
- Engine speed between 3200 and 4000 RPM for 10 seconds.
- Then release accelerator pedal for 3 seconds.
- After 3 seconds, vehicle speed must be 13mph min. and have been in overrun for 2 seconds minimum.
- Check specifications during test drive (second technician necessary).
