Removal

CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, make sure you know the correct radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and insulate.
2. Disconnect the clutch cable. Clutch Cable

Transmission:




3. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) (arrow 1) and Back-Up Light Switch (arrow 2).
4. Disconnect all other electrical connections and ground leads from the battery.
5. Remove upper bolts connecting the transmission and engine.

Transmission:




6. Remove bolt (arrow) on right side engine assembly support bracket. Where applicable, remove connector support plate "A".

Transmission:




NOTE:
- On Cabrio Models, remove engine support on body. Install spacers "C" before attaching the support.

- A spacer plate that combines the spacers in a single unit is available as a replacement part.

Torque Specifications:

Nuts A:
25 Nm (18 ft lbs)

Bolt B:
50 Nm (37 ft lbs)


Transmission:




7. Disconnect front of selector rod "A" and short selector rod "B" at the gearshift shaft lever.

Transmission:




8. Open clamp, then unhook long selector rod "C" at the relay lever.

Transmission:




9. Remove the two upper bolts (arrows) from the transmission bracket at left side of transmission.

NOTE: If applicable, remove the transmission support.

Transmission:




10. Remove the hex-head bolt (arrow 1) on left side of the transmission assembly support.
11. Remove nuts (arrow 2) on left side of the transmission support.

NOTE:
- The transmission support was gradually discontinued after approx. Nov. 1993 production.

- When performing repairs on a vehicle that is equipped with the support, it should always be re-installed.


Transmission:




NOTE: On Cabrio models, remove transmission support on the body.

Torque Specifications:

Bolt A:
50 Nm (37 ft lbs)

Nuts B:
50 Nm (37 ft lbs)

Transmission:




12. Remove bolt attaching front of bracket to engine mount.

Engine Sling:




13. Attach engine sling 10-222A and adjust 10-222A/1 adapters to slightly take up the engine weight.

NOTE: Where applicable, remove the insulation shield from beneath the engine/transmission.

14. Remove the starter.
15. Remove front bracket.

Transmission:




16. Remove left side engine mount attachment bolt (arrows).
17. Remove large clutch shield.

Transmission:




18. Remove small shield (arrows) behind right side drive flange "A".

Transmission:




19. Remove third bolt (arrow) for transmission bracket, remove bracket.
20. Use left side spindle to lower transmission.
21. Remove bolts for the left side transmission support, remove support.
22. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission. Remove the heat shield for the inner joint from engine when necessary.
23. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and suspend the drive shafts as high as possible.

Transmission Jack:




24. Push the engine/transmission assembly toward the front and around the right side assembly support.
25. Assemble the transmission jack with transmission support 3282 and adjustment plate 3282/2 and support components by placing 3282/5 adjustment plate on 3282 transmission support.

NOTE:
- Adjustment plate fits in one position only.

- Adjust arms of the transmission support to correspond to the holes in the adjustment plate.

Adjustment Plate:




26. Bolt on support components "A" to adjustment plates as shown in image.

Transmission Jack:




27. Place the transmission jack under the vehicle.

NOTE: Arrow "B" on the adjustment plate points toward the front of the vehicle.

28. Align the adjustment plate parallel to the transmission, and lock the securing support on the transmission.

NOTE: If transmission support 3282 is not available, the transmission can also be removed and installed using transmission jack VAG 1383 A.

29. Remove lower bolt attaching the engine to the transmission.

Transmission:




30. Press the transmission away from the alignment dowel pins and carefully lower.
31. Guide right drive flange "A" past the flywheel.
32. Guide left driveshaft "B" past the assembly support.

CAUTION: When lowering the transmission, use care to avoid damaging the power steering lines.
