Readiness Code Reading

Readiness code, displaying

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items:

- VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool
- VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable

Test conditions:

- Fuse 21 OK

Work sequence:






Open ashtray and remove, then slide cover for Data Link Connector (DLC) to the left (arrow)
Connect VAG1551 Scan Tool with VAG1551/3 adapter
Depending upon desired function:
- Switch ignition on or start engine
- Operate scan tool according to directions on display

- Press -1- button to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1
- Press -3- twice to select "OBDII" address word 33
Display will appear as shown:

- Press -Q- button to confirm input
Display will appear as shown:

Select mode 1.. 2.. 3.. 4.. 5.. 6.. 7..

- Press button -4- and -1- to select "Mode 41"
Display will appear as shown:

NOTES: Diagnostic data must be individually checked by pressing the -> button, you can also print them out using the PRINT button.
Various displays will be called up when using the -> button, but have no relevance for this procedure.

- Press -> button
Display will appear as shown:

Mode 41 PID 1 Module 08 ->

- Check to see that "PID 1" is displayed on the first line, and note display field 4 on the second line

NOTE: If the fourth block indicates a 1, the corresponding appropriate diagnostic step has not been carried out, and the readiness code must be created.

Significance of Figures In Fourth 8 Digit Number Block






Relevance: Indicates whether readiness code has been successfully set or not
Display bits 2 through 8 are NOT required for diagnosis
If the first display bit shows a "0" the readiness code has been set
A "1" indicates the readiness code is NOT set

- Press -> button to display any further diagnostic data
Display will appear as shown:

Mode 41 PID 1 Module 08 ->
xxx....xxx xxx...xxx xxx...xxx 00000000

Must appear on display when all diagnostic functions have been completed

If OK:
- Press -> button
- Press -0- and -6- buttons to select "End Output" function 06
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.


If one or more of the diagnostic checks has not been completed, as indicated on the display (example):

Mode 41 PID 1 Module 08 ->
xxx....xxx xxx...xxx xxx...xxx 10000000

- Press -C- button
- Create readiness code
- Display readiness code

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create readiness code again
