Campaign - Antitheft System Ground Wire Installation

Subject: Install Ground Contact Wire (BY)

Condition
Anti-theft system within VIN range 3VW_B61C_WM000320 - 3WM024505 could become inoperative if vehicle is started with the secondary non-insulated ignition key. If alarm system is inoperative, vehicle does not start.

Service
Install ground wire and check harness routing. Correct vehicles in inventory prior to their retail sale. Correct sold vehicles during the next scheduled maintenance or repair service as follows:





A. Check Presence of Ground Wire
- On the steering column, pull the adjustment lever down, and move the steering wheel to the lowest and most rearward position.
- Remove (2) screw holding lever plastic cover and remove cover.





- Remove (5) screws holding both the upper and lower steering column cover together, and remove both cover halves

NOTE: To gain access to the (2) horizontal screws, the steering wheel must be turned from side to side.





- Check if ground wire is attached to ignition switch housing as in illustration.

DO NOT REMOVE STEERING WHEEL OR AIRBAG

- If ground wire is present proceed to C.

B.Install Ground Wire





- If no ground wire is attached to the ignition housing, install new wire as follows:
- Open hood and disconnect battery ground (-) cable.
- Remove (3) screw holding cover panel, pull panel rearward and remove





- Install ground wire (N 018 048 8) on top of the ignition switch housing at 5 mm hole (see arrow) near the key slot using screw (N 013 966 26) and nut (N 015 422 2) tighten to 2.5 Nm (22 in. lb)
- Route ground wire under ignition switch to electrical harness on left side of steering column, then along harness and secure wire harness at three locations (T) using tie wrap (N 020 902 2)

- Cut off excess tie wrap material





- Attach the other end of ground wire to ground connection (see arrow) located above driver's footwell, to the left of the steering column. Tighten to 10 Nm (7 ft lb.)
- Move steering wheel, steering column and column lock lever in all direction to check for binding or interference

C.Re-assemble





- Before reinstalling the upper and lower steering column covers, wrap the harness wires with insulation (P/N 200 907 306 05) lengthwise, and place harness back into position as shown in the picture





- Reinstall steering column covers.
- Reconnect negative battery cable.
- Reset clock and activate radio with code
- Reset the power window pinch protection by inserting key in driver's door, and lowering then raising the door window. Release key and quickly turn to the "LOCK" position 2 times.
- Using VAG1551, set throttle adaptation as follows:

NOTE: For gasoline vehicles only.

- Plug VAG1551 into vehicle under dash on driver's side and turn ignition to "ON" position.
- Enter 01 then push Q button.
- Enter 02 then push Q button.
- Clear any faults present.
- Push arrow button.
- Enter 04 then push Q button.
- Enter 060 then push Q button.
- Wait a minimum of 30 seconds before pressing the arrow button.
- Press the arrow button to exit.
- Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position and remove VAG1551.
