Throttle Control Module, checking

NOTE: If the Throttle Control Module is replaced, the new module MUST be matched to the Engine Control Module.


Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 Adaptor cable
- VAG 1598/22 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- Wiring diagram

Requirements
- Throttle must be in Closed Throttle Position.
- Throttle cable adjustment must be OK
- Automatic transmission Range selector lever in "P" or "N"
- A/C must be switched OFF, if installed
- Cruise control system must function correctly, if installed.

Throttle Control Module, function
Components of the Throttle Control Module J338:

Throttle drive G186, Angle sensor 1 for Throttle drive G187, Throttle Position sensor G69 and Closed Throttle Position switch F60.

All adjustments are made using the VAG 1551 Scan Tool in Function 04: "Basic Setting."

If the Throttle Control Module loses power (e.g. disconnected) Throttle position will default to a mechanical setting. If the engine is warm, idle speed will range between 1200 -1300 RPM.

If only the Throttle drive G186 lacks power, the Throttle valve will still move to the mechanical preset position, but because the Closed Throttle Position switch F60 is still recognized; idle speed will be approx. 900 RPM which is achieved by retarding the ignition.

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. [1][2][3][4]Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Switch ON ignition.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Engine Electronics" address word 01.

- Disconnect harness connector -1- from Throttle Control Module -2-.
- Bridge connector terminals 2 + 6 using jumper wires from VW 1594 adaptor kit and observe display.

When display shows Closed Throttle Position:
- Press -> button.

When display shows Partial Throttle Position:
- Press -> button.

- Measure Throttle Drive resistance between connector terminals 7 + 8.
- Specification: 3 to 200 Ohms

- Check Voltage supply of Throttle Control Module and wiring to Control Module.

If no malfunction detected
- Replace Throttle Control Module J338.
- Match Engine Control Module to Throttle Control Module.

Throttle Position sensor G69, checking

Requirements

- Slowly open Throttle valve to Wide Open position and observe ignition angle in Display field 3.
- Value must increase uniformly over complete range.

If specification obtained

If value does not increase uniformly

- Replace Throttle Control Module J338.
- Match Engine Control Module to Throttle Control Module.

If display constantly shows 0 angle degree or is above 90 angle degree:







Check continuation when display = 0 angle degree







- Disconnect harness connector -1- from Throttle Control Module -2-.
- Bridge connector terminals 2 + 4 using jumper wires from VW 1594 adaptor kit and observe display.

When display is above 90 angle degree:
- Press -> button.

- Press Q button to enter input.
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Replace Throttle Control Module J338.
- Match Engine Control Module to Throttle Control Module.

When display is above 90 angle degree:
- Press -> button.

- Disconnect harness connector -1- from Throttle Control Module -2-.
- Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to Voltage range
- Connect multimeter to Throttle Control Module connector terminals 2 + 5.
- Switch ON ignition.
- Specification: 4.5 Volts minimum

- Switch OFF ignition.
- Connect multimeter to connector terminals 2 + 6.
- Switch ON ignition.
- Specification: 9 Volts minimum

- Switch OFF ignition.







- Connect VAG 1598/22 Test Box to ECM wiring harness.







- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box and connector using Wiring diagram.
- Terminal 1 + socket 74
- Terminal 2 + socket 67
- Terminal 4 + socket 75
- Terminal 5 + socket 62
- Terminal 6 + socket 69
- Terminal 7 + socket 59
- Terminal 8 + socket 66
- Resistance 1.5 Ohms maximum

- Check wires for shorting to one another.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms

If wiring is OK:
- Check Engine Control Module Voltage supply. Refer to "Control Module Voltage Supply Check", Testing and Inspection
- Display the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
- If DTC memory was erased or if the ECM was disconnected from Battery + , set the Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
