Battery Up To 06.99, Removing and Installing
Battery removing and installing
CAUTION!
Before working on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting the battery, re-code and check operation of the anti-theft radio.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)
Removing
First remove fuse holder on battery.
- Switch ignition off.
- Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap from battery (-) negative pole.
- Press locking lugs together (arrows) to open fuse holder and remove cover.
- Remove securing hex nut -1- for current plate on (+) positive terminal clamp.
- Remove securing hex nut -A- to disconnect wiring connected to strip fuses.
- Disconnect harness connector -2-.
- Relieve tension on securing tensioning locking device with thumb pressure and release tensioning locking device on battery with screwdriver.
- Remove fuse holder from battery upward
- Release battery (+) positive terminal clamp securing bolt (arrow).
- Battery insulation enclosure can only be opened and removed (if installed) after loosening battery (+) positive clamp, and removing battery positive terminal.
- Remove bolt (arrow).
- Remove battery hold-down bracket.
Installing
To be sure the battery seats securely, only install batteries with a 10.5 mm battery foot strip and adhere to the following work sequences:
- Install battery so lug of battery carrier (arrow) engages in battery groove -1 -
- It must not be possible to move the battery to the left or to the right.
The battery is correctly installed when the center groove in the battery foot strip aligns with threaded hole in the battery carrier (arrows).
- On batteries with hose for central venting make sure venting hose is not kinked. Only then can battery vent freely.
- On batteries without hose for central venting make sure opening on upper side of battery cover is not blocked.
- Install battery hold-down bracket -arrow- and tighten bolt to 22 Nm (16 ft lb).
- Reinstall battery insulation enclosure if necessary.
- Install positive (+) cable clamp onto battery positive terminal.
CAUTION!
- Battery terminal clamps must only be installed by hand without force, this prevents damage to the battery housing.
- Battery terminals must no longer be greased.
- After installing, check if the battery is seated securely. If the battery is not secured properly, the following will result:
- Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage
- Battery cell and plate damage
- Electrolyte leakage due to battery case damage
- Poor collision safety
- Tighten battery positive (+) terminal clamp securing screw to 6 Nm (53 in. lb).
- Install fuse holder onto battery, and install current plate onto securing pins on battery positive terminal.
- Engage fuse holder securing tensioning device on battery.
- Tighten securing hex nut -1- for current plate on (+) positive terminal clamp.
- Connect cables to strip fuses and tighten securing bolts -A-.
- Connect harness connector -2-.
- After securing (+) positive terminal clamp and fuse holder, install (-) negative terminal clamp (battery Ground (GND) strap) to negative terminal on battery.
- Tighten securing bolt to 6 Nm (53 in.lb).
NOTE: When the battery is reconnected, check the operation of electrical equipment (radio, clock and convenience electrics etc.).
