Matching Engine Control Module to Throttle Body Control Module
NOTE: When "Matching Throttle Body Control Module J338 to Engine Control Module" with the ignition switched ON and engine not running, the Engine Control Module learns the Throttle Body Control Module J338 stop positions and a comparison between Throttle Position sensor G69 and throttle valve angle sensor (G187).
Control Module Matching must be performed if:
- Voltage supply is interrupted (Battery disconnected)
- Throttle Body Control Module is removed and installed
- Throttle Body Control Module is replaced
- If as a result of installing another engine, another Throttle Body Control Module is installed
Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required:
- Scan Tool VAG 1551 with cable VAG 1551/3
Test conditions:
- No DTC's stored in DTC memory
- Battery Voltage must be 11.5 Volts minimum
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window defroster must be switched OFF
- Throttle must be in Closed Position.
- Cruise control system must function correctly (if installed)
Work sequence:
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
- Switch ON ignition
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select "Address word" 01
"Engine electronics"
Display will appear as shown

1 2 3 4
NOTES:
- After confirming Display group 60 the adaptation is introduced and the Throttle Body Drive is moved to min. max. and emergency running positions. Then using intermediate steps, a comparison is made between Throttle Position sensor G69 and Throttle Body Drive angle sensor G187.
- The Control Module stores these learned values in its permanent memory. Then the throttle stops in the start position.
- Check specifications (Display zones 1 to 4, chart.)
NOTE: If the Control Module Basic setting is interrupted, the cause could be one of the following:
- Throttle cannot reach mechanical stop because of contamination e.g. oil deposits or an incorrectly adjusted throttle cable.
- Battery Voltage too low.
- Throttle Body Control Module or wiring is faulty.
After an abort, DTC "17967" is stored in DTC memory. When next switching ON the ignition Basic setting is automatically performed again.
- End engine basic setting at the earliest after 30 seconds by pressing -> button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06: "End data transfer"
- Press Q button to enter input
