Differential, Removing And Installing
The drive pinion does not need to be removed for removing and installing the differential.
1. Bolt
^ 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
2. Flanged shaft
3. Spring for flanged shaft
4. Thrust washer
^ Installation position: Shoulder toward spring, tongue to tapered ring
5. Tapered ring
^ With grooves to secure thrust washer
^ Installation position: Taper toward differential housing
6. Circlip
^ Holds tapered ring, thrust washer and spring in position when flanged shaft is removed
7. Oil seal for flanged shaft
^ Before installing, pack space between sealing lips with multi-purpose grease
^ Can be replaced with gear set installed.
^ Remove with VW 681
^ Driving in
8. Speedometer drive gear
^ Installation position: Lugs on inner circumference face flanged shaft, the taper faces differential.
9. Bolt
^ 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
^ Insert with locking fluid AMV 188 200 03
^ Tighten in stages and diagonally
10. Oil filler plug
^ 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
^ With magnet
^ Checking gear oil with transmission installed Differential Fluid - A/T
11. Speedometer drive sender
12. O-ring
^ Always replace
13. Cover for final drive
14. O-ring
15. Differential
^ Always replace
^ When replacing ring gear, readjust
16. Bolt
^ 10 Nm (7ft. lbs.)
17. Cover
^ For axle breather
18. Seal
^ Always replace
19. Spring
^ When differential is installed, pull in together with grooved ball bearing -item 21- and tapered ring -item 20-

^ Installation position: Stepped collar faces grooved ball bearing

^ Pry out with screwdriver
