Throttle Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection



The Throttle Position sensor is located on the accelerator pedal and transmits the driver's throttle pedal input to the ECM.





Special tools, workshop equipment, test and measuring appliances and aux. items required:
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- Fluke 83 Multimeter
- VAG 1598/22 Test Box
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using cable VAG 1551/3
- Wiring diagram





Test Sequence:
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool
- Switch ON ignition
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address Word 01
"Engine electronics"

Display will appear as shown

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX


- Press 0 and 8 buttons to select Function 08
"Read measuring value block"
- Press Q button to enter input

Display will appear as shown

Read measuring value block HELP
Input display group number XXX


- Press 0, 0 and 2 buttons to select "Display group 2"
- Press Q button to enter input

- Observe Throttle position in display zone 2.
(Accelerator pedal must not be depressed)

Read measuring value block 2 ->
0 rpm 0.0 % 0 1 0 18.4 °C


- Specification: 0.0 %
- Also check the idle speed switch display in display zone 3. The center position must show 1. Display: 010

- Slowly push on accelerator pedal until fully depressed, observe display zones 2 and 3.

Read measuring value block 2 ->
0 rpm 100.0 % 0 0 0 18.4 °C


- Display zone 2:
Throttle position display must increase continuously.
Specification at Wide Open Throttle position: 100 %

- Display zone 3:
The center position must change to 0. Display: 000

If the End specification value not obtained
- Press -> button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06 "End data transfer"
- Press Q button to enter input
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Adjust Throttle Position sensor

If display does not change or is erratic:
- Check Throttle Position sensor as follows:
- Press -> button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06 "End data transfer"
- Press Q button to enter input
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Disconnect 6-pin Throttle Position sensor harness connector.






- Measure sensor resistance between terminals 1 + 3.
Specifications:
- Throttle in Closed Throttle position: 1.0 to 1.5 Kilo Ohms
- Throttle in Wide Open Throttle position: 1.5 to 2.5 Kilo Ohms
- Check Closed Throttle Position switch F60 in Throttle Position sensor by measuring resistance between terminals 4 + 6.
Specifications:
- Throttle in Closed Throttle position:1.5 Kilo Ohms maximum
- Throttle depressed: Infinity Ohms

If specifications not obtained:
- Replace Throttle Position sensor G79





If specifications obtained:
- Connect VAG 1598/22 Test Box to ECM harness connector.





- Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit according to Wiring diagram.
Terminal 1 + socket 24
Terminal 2 + socket 11
Terminal 3 + socket 23
Terminal 4 + socket 12
Terminal 5 + socket 8
Terminal 6 + socket 25
Wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum

- Check wires for short to one another, to vehicle Ground and to battery Plus.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms

If wiring OK:
- Replace Engine Control Module J248
- Display Readiness code

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create Readiness code
