Clutch Pedal Switch, Checking

NOTE: The clutch pedal switch F36 informs the ECM when the clutch is being engaged or disengaged. This prevents the engine from jolting when disengaging and engaging and also prevents the engine from racing during disengaging operations when the cruise control system is switched ON.


Special tools, workshop equipment, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adaptor cable
- VAG 1598/22 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- Wiring diagram

Test sequence

- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. Testing and Inspection
- Ensure that ignition is switched ON
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01: "Engine electronics"

- Press buttons 0 and 8 to select Function 08: "Read measuring value block"
- Press Q button to enter input

- Press buttons 0, 0 and 6 to select "Display group 6"
- Press Q button to enter input
- Observe display in display zone 2.

- Operate clutch pedal.

- Left-hand value must change to 1.

Specification: 1 0 0


Read measuring value block 6 ->
0 km/h 100 000000 255


If specifications not obtained:
- Press-button.
- Press 0, 0 and 6 buttons to select "Display group 6"
- Press Q button to enter input
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Disconnect clutch pedal switch harness connector. Service and Repair
- Measure resistance at switch terminals.

Clutch not depressed: 10 Infinity Ohms maximum Clutch depressed:

If specifications not obtained
- Replace clutch pedal switch F36
- Display Readiness code. Testing and Inspection

If DTC memory has been erased
- Create Readiness code. Testing and Inspection

If specifications obtained:
- Connect VAG 1598/22 Test Box to ECM wiring harness.







- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box and harness connector using Wiring diagram.
- Terminal 1 + socket 2
- Terminal 1 + socket 28
- Terminal 2 + socket 46
- Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ohms







- Check wires for short to one another, to vehicle Ground and to battery Plus.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms

If wiring OK
- Replace Diesel direct injection system ECM J248.
- Display Readiness code. Testing and Inspection

If DTC memory has been erased
- Create Readiness code. Testing and Inspection
