Transmission, removing and installing
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
Special tools and auxiliary items
^ Engine support bracket 10-222A with supports10-222A/1
^ Adapter 10-222A/3
^ Transmission holder 3282
^ Alignment plate 3282/3
^ Engine/transmission jack VAG 1383 A
^ Torque wrench VAG 1331 (5...50 Nm)
^ Torque wrench VAG 1332 (40...200 Nm)
Removing
- Obtain radio code.
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove engine cover.
- Assemble adapter 10-222 A/3 for front spindle on support bar.
- Set support bar 10-222 A with legs 10-222 A/1 and support engine/transmission in position as illustrated.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove front wheels.
- Remove noise insulation tray.
- Remove noise insulation tray bracket.
- Mark connections -arrows C and D- to aid reinstallation.
- Remove electrical connections -arrows A to D- on transmission.
- Remove wiring harness clamp-arrow E-.
- Disconnect speedometer connector at transmission.
- Remove front exhaust system with catalyst.
- Remove right drive shaft protective plate.
- Remove selector lever cable protective plate.
- Remove right bonded rubber mount protective plate on transmission.
- Remove ATF lines from engine/transmission assembly and tie-up.
- Disconnect drive shafts at flanges and tie-up.
- Remove starter.
- Remove nut from torque converter.
- Remove lower engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Set up transmission mount 3282.
Transmission mount 3282 is set up with adjusting plate 3282/2 for removing automatic transmission 01 N.
Symbols on adjusting plate indicate mounts required, arrow points forward.
- Move jack VAG 1383 A with transmission mount 3282 under transmission and support transmission.
- Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission and lock safety support -arrow- on transmission.
- Move selector lever to Park "P" position and pull selector lever cable off selector lever shaft.
- Remove bolt on selector lever cable support bracket and remove selector lever cable.
- Remove right transmission support (arrow) with bonded rubber mount.
- Remove left bonded rubber mount.
- Lower rear of engine/transmission assembly slightly with jack VAG 1383 A.
- Remove upper engine/transmission connecting bolts (arrows).
- Separate transmission from engine; when doing this, press torque converter out of drive plate.
- Press torque converter against ATF pump.
- Lower transmission.
- Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out.
Installing
- Clean ATF cooler and ATF lines before installing a replacement transmission. Fluid Line/Hose
- Before installing transmission ensure torque converter seats correctly in transmission. Fluid Line/Hose
- Before installing, ensure dowel pins are correctly located.
- Ensure intermediate plate is correctly positioned on engine.
- Set up transmission mount 3282.
Transmission mount 3282 is set up with adjusting plate 3282/2 for removing automatic transmission 01N.
Symbols on adjusting plate indicate mounts required, the arrow points forward.
- Place transmission on transmission jack.
- Lock safety support (arrow) to transmission.
- Place transmission jack under vehicle.
- Align transmission to engine.
- Install upper engine/transmission securing bolts.
- Raise rear engine/transmission assembly slightly using jack VAG 1383A.
- Install left bonded rubber mount.
- Install right transmission support (arrow) with bonded rubber mount.
- Install lower engine/transmission connecting bolts
- Install nuts to torque converter.
- Install starter.
- Bolt drive shafts to transmission.
- Install ATF lines on engine/transmission assembly.
- Install right bonded rubber mount protective plate on transmission.
- Install selector lever cable protective plate.
- Install right axle shaft protective plate.
- Install front exhaust system with catalyst.
- Reconnect speedometer sender connector.
- Reconnect electrical connections -arrows A to D- on transmission.
- Do not interchange electrical connections -arrows C and D-. Connection -arrow C- to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G68 (right side of transmission). Connection -arrow D- to Transmission Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) -G38 (left side of transmission).
- Install wiring harness clamp -arrow E-.
- Install noise insulation tray bracket.
- Install noise insulation tray.
- Install front wheels.
- Remove support device 10-222A.
- Install engine cover.
- Reconnect ground strap (GND) to battery.
- Move selector lever to Park " P" position and push selector lever cable onto selector lever shaft.
- Install bolt to support bracket and install selector lever cable.
- Check selector lever cable adjustment, adjust if necessary.
- With transmission installed, check final drive oil level.
- Check and top up ATF level.

Right rear (illustration) and left assembly mounts tightened to same torque.
A = 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)
B = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
C = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Drive shaft to transmission M8: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Drive shaft to transmission M10: 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.)
Torque converter to drive plate: 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.)
Drive shaft protective plate to transmission: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
Selector lever cable protective plate to transmission M6: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
Selector cable protective plate to transmission M10: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
Right bonded rubber mount protective plate to transmission: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
Support bracket/selector lever cable to transmission: 23 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
Selector lever cable to support bracket: 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.)
Starter to transmission: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
Wheel bolts to wheel hub: 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
