Alternator: Service and Repair



Generator (GEN), Removing And Installing


CAUTION!
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch the ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
- After reconnecting battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed








- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)







1 - Hex nut
2 - Screw
- M 3 x 18 mm
3 - Protective cover
4 - Screw
- M4 x 25 mm
5 - Voltage Regulator (VR)
6 - Hex nut
- 45 Nm (33 ft. lb)
7 - Socket head bolt
- M8 x 20 mm
- 25 Nm (18 ft. lb)

8 - Bracket
9 - Socket head bolt
- M10 x 125 mm
10 - Ribbed belt
11 - Generator - (GEN)
12 - Socket head bolt
- M8 x 75
13 - Spacer sleeve
14 - Air intake


REMOVAL

1. Remove engine cover/trim.
2. Remove front bumper.
3. Bring front end assembly (lock carrier) into service position.
4. Remove ribbed belt from generator pulley. Service and Repair

For routing, Diagrams

5. Disconnect air duct from generator fitting.
6. Disconnect B+ and D+ wires.

To reconnect, Mechanical Specifications

7. Remove Hex socket bolt (9) and Hex nut (6).

Tightening torque 45 Nm

8. Loosen Hex socket bolt (12).

Tightening torque 25 Nm

9. Remove generator.


INSTALLATION

Install generator in reverse order of removal.
