Auxiliary Shaft Seal: Service and Repair
LEGEND
1 Auxiliary Shaft Oil Seal
- To remove, remove sealing flange.
- Install using installer tool No. 10-203, or equivalent.
- Lightly oil sealing lip, do NOT use grease.
2 Woodruff Key
- Ensure tight fit.
3 Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
4 Front Sealing Flange
5 Gasket
- Always replace.
6 Cylinder Block
7 Bolt
- Always replace.
- Tighten in two stages:
- First stage, tighten to: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
- Second stage, turn an additional: 90° (1/4 turn).
8 Pressure Plate or Drive Plate
- Note installed position of washer for mounting bolts.
- Use counter holder tool No. 3067, or equivalent to remove and install.
- Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
9 Bolt
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.).
10 Intermediate Plate
- Must be located on dowels.
- Do not damage/bend when assembling.
11 Rear Oil Seal Flange with Seal
- Only replace complete.
- Lightly oil sealing lip of oil seal, do NOT grease.
12 Front Crankshaft Oil Seal
13 Auxiliary Shaft
14 O-ring
- Always replace
15 Sealing Flange For Auxiliary Shaft

To Replace Intermediate Shaft Oil Seal:
1. Remove the camshaft drive belt.
2. Lock the intermediate shaft sprocket in place and loosen the sprocket center bolt. Remove the bolt and the sprocket. Remove the woodruff key from the shaft.
NOTE: Hold the intermediate shaft sprocket stationary using a holding fixture (VW special tool 3036. or equivalent) when loosening the sprocket mounting bolt.
3. Remove the two bolts holding the oil seal carrier to the cylinder block and pull out the seal carrier. Pry or hand press the seal out of the carrier.
4. Reinstall the seal carrier with a new 0-ring.
5. Lightly oil the seal and the shaft sealing surface. Fit the seal into position, and carefully press it into place.
NOTE: Use care not to distort the seal as it is installed. For best results, use a seal press such as Volkswagen special tool no. 10-203.
6. Install the woodruff key to the intermediate shaft and install the sprocket while aligning the keyway. Lock the intermediate shaft sprocket in place and tighten the bolt.
7. Install the camshaft drive belt.
Tightening Torques:
Intermediate shaft oil seal carrier to engine block: 25 Nm (18 ft lb).
Intermediate shaft sprocket to intermediate shaft: 80 Nm (59 ft lb).
