Model(s):
New (Cabrio, Golf, Jetta, Beetle) 1998-2000 with Auto. Trans. and CAN - Bus

Condition:
Transmission in limp mode with no MIL illumination (it is also possible that the MIL has flashed but did not stay on).

The following symptoms accompany the transmission related DTC fault codes listed below:

^ MIL illuminates once, for a short period

^ MIL command "ON" message is stored

^ Vehicle defaults to third gear, or a combination of second and third gear (limp mode)

^ Shift indicator (in instrument cluster) changes to a dark back-ground.

^ Shift indicator (in instrument cluster) does not function.

Production:
New software levels introduced to correct MIL operation to comply with EPA and California ARB (OBD) regulations.

See table for part number / EPROM levels of TCM's with corrected software.

Service:
This improper MIL illumination is caused by a 1CM programming design deficiency and cannot be corrected.

If a customer experiences automatic transmission related problems, along with the symptoms listed in this Technical Bulletin:

- Perform the designated repair procedures as described in the Repair Manual CD-ROM Automatic Transmission: Automatic Transmission O1M - On Board Diagnostics

DO NOT!
Replace a TCM for listed condition unless repair procedures (per diagnosis in Repair Manual) require replacement.
