Steering Column Switches, Removing And Installing

CAUTION!

- Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:

- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch all electrical consumers.
- Switch the ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect negative (-) battery terminal.
- When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks.

CAUTION!

- Special safety precautions apply to vehicles equipped with airbags. Service Precautions

Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required







- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)

Removing

- Disconnect battery.
- Remove driver's airbag.






- Remove socket head bolt -2-.
- Position steering wheel -1- in central position (wheels straight ahead).
- Pull steering wheel -1- from steering column.






- Remove bolts -1-.
- Remove handle for height and reach adjustment.
- Unscrew bolts -2-, -3- and -4-.
- Remove lower steering column switch trim.






- Remove upper steering column switch trim -1-.






- Disconnect electrical connection -1-.
- Release locking lugs -arrows- and spiral spring connection from steering column switch.






- Loosen clamping bolt for steering column switch and remove steering column switch.

Installing

NOTE:






- Dimension -a- between steering wheel and spiral spring housing must be maintained.

a - approx. 2.5 mm

- Insert steering column switches.






- Install steering wheel so that the marked line -arrow A- on the steering wheel and the center punch mark -arrow B- on the steering column align.
- Install socket head bolt for steering wheel and tighten (do not torque as wheel will be removed again).
- Align steering column switch horizontally.






- Set gap -a- approx 2.5 mm.
- Tighten clamping bolt -3-.
- Remove steering wheel again.






- Install upper trim -1- for steering column switch.
- Install lower trim for steering column switch
- Install handle for height and reach adjustment.






- Install bolts -1-.
- Install bolts -2-, -3- and -4-.
- Install steering wheel.
- Inspect socket head bolt.


WARNING!

- Steering wheel socket head bolts can be reused 5 times only.
- Check number of center-punch marks made on socket head bolt from previous repairs (steering wheel removed). Socket head bolts with 5 center punch marks are to be replaced!


- Use socket head bolts with locking fluid.
- Install multi-point socket head bolt for steering wheel and tighten.
Tightening torque: 50 Nm
- Make one center punch mark on socket head bolt.
- Install driver's side airbag.
- Reconnect battery.
