Special Tools And Equipment





- VW 385/17 End dimension plate





- VW 387 Universal dial gauge bracket
- Dial gauge
- Torque gauge (commercially available) 0 - 600 Nm (0 - 53 inch lbs.)

Conditions
- Before disassembling, measure and record friction torque
- Support ring for drive pinion bearing is installed and secured.
- Parking lock mechanism and parking lock gear are installed.

Adjusting:





- Place two shims (each 1.5 mm thick) (arrow) on drive pinion.
- Place output gear with tapered roller bearing on drive pinion and tighten nut (41 mm AF) to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.); engage parking lock when performing this step.





- Insert dial gauge -A- and zero with a preload of 1 mm. Move drive pinion up and down. Read play at gauge and note (example 0.93 mm).

Note:
- When measuring, do not turn drive pinion as bearings will otherwise settle and falsify measurement result.

Shims, Determining
Specified bearing preload is achieved if reading (0.93 mm), bearing preload (0.12 mm), and compression amount (0.10 mm) are deducted from (2 x 1.5 mm thick) shims.





- Remove output gear. Determine size of shim on basis of table.
- Re-install output gear and tighten nut to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.) and secure with drift.

Friction torque, checking
If tapered roller bearings have not been replaced, friction torque must not be checked. Then adjust drive pinion as described.
- Lubricate bearing beforehand with gear oil.
A-Torque gauge, commercially available, 0 - 600 Nm (0 - 53 inch lbs.)
B-Wrench socket (41 mm AF)
Friction torque of new tapered roller bearings must be 80 - 120 Nm (7 - 11 inch pounds).





Note:
- Do not oil revised tapered roller bearings from 27 048 beginning build date

Transmission tapered roller bearings (from 27 04 8 build date)
- Install these new tapered roller bearings as delivered without adding grease.

Friction torque for these bearings is 60 - 160 Nm (5 - 14 inch lbs.) higher than friction value measured before at axle shaft.
This new tapered roller bearing has a revised friction value. If they are greased specified value can not be attained or torque is too high.
